CNN's biased reporting on Sarah Palin

Just about every mom hears this at some point in her career: “Considering the hours/travel/demands, we went with another candidate for the job/promotion.” What that means is: “You have kids, so, we won't give you the job/promotion you've earned.” Which translates directly into “We’re not hiring/promoting you because you’re a woman who acts and lives like a woman.”

Remember this, because it’s going to be very important as the Democrats seek to dismantle Sarah Palin. You see, here’s something the majority of the women’s studies crowd believes, but never articulates: “The only women worthy of power are women in drag.” The maternal instinct has been much maligned and even more resented by a society that is dominated by overgrown adolescent boys. Some feminists, in a bent bid for influence, have jettisoned their womanhood. They have a kid or two, maybe, but pack them off in the care of nannies. They make it clear to the world that absolutely nothing, not even their own children, will keep them from doing just as good a job as any man. They don their pants suits and rage about equal rights, but how are these rights equal when they require us to surrender the part of ourselves that makes us well and truly women? Not that being able to give birth makes you a mom. The thing that makes you a mom is raising your kids. Society expects that of you, unless you want or need to have a job, then society wants you to pack those kids off in a far corner of your existence and forget about them. The adolescent males running the world don’t want to be reminded that every one of them has a mother.

So, it wasn’t a shock last night when CNN’s Kyra Phillips opined that maybe Palin shouldn’t have the job of VP because she has kids. “How can she take care of them?” she asked (and added something to the effect of ‘And look, one of them’s a pregnant teenager’ as if she doesn’t know that many thousands of wonderful parents have endured the heartache of having a teenager become a parent). To his credit, Anderson Cooper quickly drew her attention to the sexism of her remark, asking why no one was saying the same thing about Barack Obama. As a working mom, Anderson, I thank you for your sensitivity and sense of balance. But there are other things that CNN hasn’t reported and the integrity of any news agency can be gauged by what it doesn’t say. For example:

So-called “troopergate” is old news. When I Googled Palin days before McCain’s VP announcement, the whole ruckus with trooper Mike Wooten, her ex-brother-in-law (who according to Anchorage Daily News reports threatened to kill Palin’s father and Tasered his own 11 year-old stepson) was the very first thing that came up. Palin fired Public Safety Commissioner Monegan in mid-July, because she says he wasn’t bringing the energy to the job she felt it needed. I don’t know about you, but I think I’d prefer my state troopers to use their Tasers on-the-job, not at home on kids. If I were Wooten’s boss, I would have fired him. It’s dangerous to have your officers Tasering kids.

Yet, Wooten remains on the force. Palin didn’t get him fired. (CNN hasn’t reported that to my knowledge—they just keep harping on Palin “using her influence to get her former brother-in-law fired”—but he didn’t get fired, folks).

I found this lovely tidbit just by putting Palin’s name in Google and hitting “search.” Why didn’t CNN and the others out this immediately? You can bet McCain’s camp found it long before they made their pick.

According to an Anchorage Daily News story on July 18: “In August 2005, Sarah Palin wrote an e-mail to then-Col. Julia Grimes, who was head of the troopers, about Wooten, calling him, "a ticking timebomb," according to an e-mail Todd Palin forwarded to the Daily News around that time.

The state troopers launched an investigation in 2005. In the end, Wooten was reprimanded for the moose [illegal hunting] and Taser incidents. Regarding the Taser, [union steward John] Cyr said Wooten was teaching the child about what if feels like to be hit by the stun gun. The trooper was disciplined without pay for 10 days, which was eventually, under Monegan, reduced, Cyr said.”

The Anchorage newspaper went on to report in its July 18 edition: “Todd Palin said that since his wife took office he contacted the troopers regarding Wooten only once, in April 2007. He said Wooten was on worker's compensation for a back injury but Todd Palin saw him numerous times around Wasilla looking like he did not have a back injury -- jumping up and down at local games. Then Palin saw him 110 miles from Wasilla on a snowmobile, demonstrating what he thought was an abuse of his worker's comp. Palin took a photo and forwarded it to Wooten's boss.

On Thursday, the governor held little regard for the trooper. She and her husband said they do not believe Wooten has what it takes to be a state cop.

"Based on what I know of trooper Wooten and his threat to kill a person, saying they will 'eat an f'in bullet,' and you know he said this with a gun on his hip; knowing of his drinking in a patrol car, knowoing of his illegally killing of the moose, knowing of his Tasering I believe at that time his 11-year-old stepson; knowing of his verbal abuse of minors, my daughter. ... I would question any trooper driving a car where the logo is printed on the side of that car being 'integrity, (loyalty, and courage')."

So CNN sends their reporter-Babe to Alaska, Randy Kay. She used to work in Minneapolis, where her most memorable assignment was to live as a shut-in with her cat for a year, with only a web-cam to report in to WCCO. Anyway, Randy reports this drivel every night on CNN from Alaska, on Palin. Have you seen the 300 pound loser brother-in-law State Trooper? And this guy tasered a small child with his police-issued taser, but skates away with only a 5-day suspension. The drive-by media is trying to destroy Sarah Palin but will end up destroying themselves. "If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide." - Abraham Lincoln
