Dine out to honor Meredith Emerson

When tragedy strikes, we huddle around our TVs, our radios and our computers, trying to get more information, shaking our heads in disbelief and wishing there was something we could do. This was the feeling we all shared when Meredith Emerson was kidnapped from the North Georgia mountains on New Year's Day and then subsequently found murdered on January 7. This Wednesday, June 25, Atlantans have an opportunity to honor and remember Meredith Emerson by dining out at any Atlanta and North Georgia Applebee's location anytime during store hours. The restaurant chain will donate 15 percent of diners' total bills to Right to Hike, Inc. However, you must present this invitation to their servers in order for your efforts to count.

Right to Hike, Inc. was founded in memoriam of Meredith with plans to support causes close to Meredith's heart, including hiking safety. June 25 is five days after what would have been Meredith's 25th birthday.

There are 40 Applebee's in metro Atlanta. Find the one closest to you here.

BLAST OFF FOR 1982

Shoulder pads, Dr. Ruth and “Dynasty” are just a few artifacts from the ’80s unlikely to make a comeback anytime soon. Certain classics, however, will always remain timeless—and E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL is one of them. Head out to Centennial Olympic Park tonight for an evening of nostalgia with Screen on the Green’s showing of this classic family film. Show up at 7 p.m. to kick back and enjoy the sounds of local pop/rock artist Bria Kam. Admission is free (but don’t bring any glass containers, alcohol, grills or pets, please). 404-575-7888. www.peachtreetv.com.

OSCAR! OSCAR!

What’s better than enjoying a flick at the Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival at the Fox Theatre? How about enjoying two Academy Award-winning classics? There’s no arguing that 1942’s CASABLANCA, which screens tonight, deserves its spot on the roster—the timeless love story set against a Moroccan backdrop during World War II is one of the greatest movies of all time. And we’re pretty confident that last year’s superlative NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, which screens Wednesday, will attain similar status. Both evenings include wine tastings, a singalong, a classic cartoon and, of course, music from Larry Douglas Embury on the beloved “Mighty Mo” organ. 404-817-8700. www.foxtheatre.org.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FURIOUS FIVE?

It’s not every day you get to spend a few seconds making pleasant chit-chat with one of the innovative pioneers of old-school hip-hop. Well, Tuesday, June 17, is one of those days, as virtuoso DJ GRANDMASTER FLASH visits Borders Buckhead tonight to sign his memoir, “Grandmaster Flash: My Beats, My Rhymes.” In addition to signing books, we’re sure Mr. Flash will answer questions about his adventures, his beats and, inevitably, his rhymes. The event starts at 7:30 p.m. 404-237-0707. www.borders.com.

EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSIE

Yes, she’s a polarizing figure for her outspoken political opinions and her pushy stint as co-host on “The View.” But we can’t imagine anyone getting too out of shape about ROSIE O’DONNELL’s book “Crafty U: 100 Easy Projects the Whole Family Can Enjoy All Year Long.” Before she takes the stage as part of the True Colors Tour (along with Cyndi Lauper, the B-52’s and others) tomorrow night (Monday, June 16), catch the Mistress of Mouth as she signs copies of the book at the Michaels location at 7491 North Point Parkway in the Mansell Crossing Shopping Center in Alpharetta. The signing starts at noon. For more information, call the store at 678-722-0036 or visit www.rosie.com.
